In 1960 I first heard the Bill Evans Trio on the record: “Portrait in Jazz”. This made such an impression on me that I have continued to follow Bill Evans from then on.

Erwin studied with me at the Rotterdam Conservatory and there I apparently infected him with the ‘Bill Evans virus’. So it is not so strange that he has asked me to write the ‘liner notes’ for this oeuvre.

Erwin made extensive studies of various Bill Evans recordings and has translated the piano harmonies as well as possible to the guitar, this is a very difficult task in which I have great admiration for his persistence!

He has excellent technique when it comes to single note and chords. His solos are very melodic, interspersed with technical highlights with surprisingly no patterns of jazz. With his ‘single note’ solos he manages to take the listener along in the harmonic turn of the composition by completing it with beautiful chords.

The repertoire is diverse: From meditative, bebop, mainstream to funk. A important aspect is that Erwin has a natural swinging timing.

A good choice is the rhythm section: Harry Emmery is a great versatile jazz bassist with a lot of experience in a guitar trio. Drummer René Winter completes the trio with his very tasteful interpretation.
