Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was een Duitse wetenschapper, filosoof en schrijver. Hij schreef zowel romans als toneelstukken. Zijn meest bekende werken zijn ‘Faust’, ‘Die Leiden des jungen Werthers’ en ‘Zur Farbenlehre’. In 1749 werd Johann Wolfgang von Goethe geboren in Frankfurt. Hij studeerde rechten aan de universiteiten van Leipzig en Straatsburg, waarna hij in 1772 aan de slag ging bij hoogste gerechtshof van het Duitse Rijk. In 1775 verhuisde Goethe naar Weimar, waar hij veel schreef en enkele politieke taken voldeed in staatsdienst van de hertog van Weimar. In deze tijd werkte hij aan zijn autobiografische roman ‘Aus meinem Leven, Dichtung und Wahrheit’ en zijn wereldberoemde werk ‘Faust (II)’. Naast Faust schreef hij onder andere de toneelstukken ‘Reineke Fuchs’ en ‘Wilhelm Meister’. Iets meer dan 10 jaar later vertrok Goethe voor een Grant Tour twee jaar naar Italië. Hij maakte notities van zijn reis en belevingen, wat leidde tot het boek ‘Italienische Reise’. In 1788 riep de hertog hem weer terug naar Weimar voor de Eerste Coalitieoorlog. Vanaf 1794 wijdde Goethe zijn leven voornamelijk aan schrijven en het afnemen van audiënties in zijn huis in Weimar. Hij overleed op 82-jarige leeftijd in 1932.
