Samenvatting

The fantastic new collection of stories from the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of ‘The Shipping News’ and ‘Brokeback Mountain’.

The fantastic new collection of stories from the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of ‘The Shipping News’ and ‘Brokeback Mountain’.

‘Fine Just The Way It Is’ marks Annie Proulx's return to the Wyoming of ‘Brokeback Mountain’ and the familiar cast of hardy, unsentimental prairie folk. The stories are cast over centuries, and capture the voices and lives of the settlers this sagebrushed and weatherworn country has known, from the native Indian tribes to the modern day ranch owners and politicians, and their cowboy forebears.

In ‘A Family Man’, an old man nearing the end of his life unburdens himself of the weighty family secrets that were his father’s unwelcome legacy. ‘Them Old Cowboy Songs’ follows Archie and Rosie, a young pioneer couple, and their hardships in their attempt to homestead in the exposed wintry expanses of the prairie, and ‘Testimony of the Donkey’ finds a young international couple, Marc and Caitlin, struggling with much more modern concerns, and confronting uncertainty as their relationship comes to its end.

These are stories of desperation and hard times, often marked by an inescapable sadness, set in a landscape both brutal and magnificent. Enlivened by folk tales, flights of fancy, and details of ranch and rural work, they juxtapose Wyoming’s traditional character and attitudes – confrontation of tough problems, prejudice, persistence in the face of difficulty – with the more benign values of the new west. These are bold, elegant and memorable pieces, and once more confirm Annie Proulx as one of the most talented, unique short story writers in the language.

  • Wyoming in the 21st century

Third collection of stories about Wyoming, always a wild state with few jobs, but today the venue of oil and gas companies, “striating” the state with pipelines. Bad weather is still much in evidence, killing people on hiking trails, causing cows to slip into irrigation channels leaving them “tits-up in a ditch”, the title of the final story.
Seven of the 9 stories in this book are stunners. Brilliant, heart-rending tales of bad luck and tears. Some start in the late 19th, others end in the early 21st century. Some span years, others more than a century. The opening and closing stories end in the first decade of the 21st century and are high drama.
The first story (“Family Man”) is about an 84-year old penniless ex-cowboy in a nursing home whose bills are paid by his grandchild’s husband. She wants to tape record his memories to create a family history. The sessions make him doubt about the young being smart... The last is about poor Dakotah, abandoned as a newborn by her 15-year old mother and raised without love by her grandparents. She marries Sash when pregnant months before graduating from high school. The rest is pure tragedy: she enlists and serves in Iraq… Five more stories on life in Wyoming are great, authentic, well researched and empathically written.
This leaves her 2 remaining stories. The rather silly opening story of her collection “Bad Dirt” (2004) dealt with poachers sucked into a hell hole when apprehended. Two stories in this volume expand on the idea of hell. he Devil himself explains to readers the lay-out of Hell, the need for innovation, its 9 circles, his hopes for a tenth, its offenders by type, etc., etc. Again, Annie Proulx applied lots of deep research about who painted the Devil, lots of Greek mythology. Hope she stops wasting her time and energy on this type of nonsense.
