Samenvatting
Re-issued in time for the centenary, this book examines Galway's remarkable contribution to the first World War.
When the First World War was declared, a surge of euphoria swept across Great Britain and Ireland. In Britain, most men joined the army for ‘king and country’. Many Galwaymen, convinced by conscription rallies of the imminent threat to their country, flocked to join the British Army. Almost every family in Galway was affected by the Great War. However, with the dramatic change in the political climate after 1916, these men came home to a very different Ireland. Thousands left as heroes, but when they returned they were treated as traitors and were unable to tell anyone of the horrors and suffering they had witnessed. This book examines the outbreak of the Great War, the impact it had on those left behind and, through contemporary letters and interviews with Galwaymen, the lives of the men at the Front.
