Het boek gaat over voetbal. Natuurlijk. Maar vooral ook over het Verenigd Koninkrijk en zijn inwoners. Een erudiete en toch uitermate leesbare sociologische studie. Goldblatt slaat de plank meestal raak, bijvoorbeeld met zijn analyse van de identificatie van New Labour met voetbal. Maar soms ook mis. De stelling dat de dominante voetbalclubs van de afgelopen decennia voornamelijk uit industriesteden komen, en niet uit de elitaire hoofdsteden, gaat bijvoorbeeld behoorlijk mank. Liverpool en Manchester vs Londen, nou vooruit. Maar industriestad Amsterdam vs het elitaire Den Haag? Nou nee. Kleine smetjes op een verder glanzend blazoen. Lees, leer en geniet!
