In Great Scott creëert Joyce DiDonato een rol die speciaal voor haar is bedacht. Het personage dat ze speelt, Arden Scott, is een operaster die terugkeert naar haar geboortestad om het gezelschap dat haar carrière lanceerde te redden, maar de première valt op dezelfde avond als het eerste nationale kampioenschap van het thuisteam. Jake Heggie, die wordt omschreven als de meest succesvolle componist van de Amerikaanse opera, koos de gevierde toneelschrijver Terence McNally als zijn librettist voor Great Scott. De twee werkten eerder samen aan het aangrijpende Dead Man Walking, dat een soort moderne klassieker is geworden sinds de creatie in
2000, waarbij Joyce DiDonato eveneens de hoofdrol vertolkte.
