Een absolute aanrader voor wie al wat van jazz weet of er graag kennis mee wil maken. Gioia gaat in op de karakteristieken van een jazzcompositie, analyseert enkele nummers en geeft een kort - en net daarom heel praktisch - historisch overzicht van de belangrijkste jazz-genres en hun invloedrijkste vertegenwoordigers. Biografie blijft achterwege; dit boek gaat over de muziek, niet de levens van de uitvoerders. Bijzonder interessant zijn de vele aangereikte aanknopingspunten: de bespreking van elk genre of elke uitvoerder eindigt met een 'waar te beginnen'-lijstje. Achterin het boek staat een lijst van 150 artiesten die vandaag de moeite waard zijn. De lezer hoeft dus niet te blijven hangen bij Armstrong, Ellington en Davis. YouTube of Spotify doen de rest.
