Tijden heb ik gezocht naar een auteur die ook maar een beetje in de buurt komt van Isaac Asimov. Het lijkt erop dat Dan Simmons die auteur is. Ben ondertussen bezig met het 3de boek in de reeks en ben zeer tevreden. Een auteur die de moeite neemt om dingen als ruimtereizen en communicatie methoden te verklaren.

In Hypernion komen meerdere hoofdpersonen voor, maar door de indeling van de hoofdstukken is het niet verwarrend (waar bijvoorbeeld Lord of the Rings voor mij dat wel was). Ik heb meegeleefd met ieder personage en het uitlezen van de 2 hypernion boeken maakte me dan ook wel wat verdrietig.

Deze reeks boeken (4 in totaal) zijn waanzinnig goed. Prachtig geschreven, sterke verhaallijnen en geniale plots. Ook een van de weinige reeksen waarbij ik elk boek evengoed of beter vond dan de vorige. Werkelijk waar het meesterwerk van deze schrijver en wellicht wel mijn favoriete boekenreeks (na toch wel honderden sci fi/fantasy boeken te hebben gelezen :))

On the eve of a hostile invasion a group of seven is send on a last pilgrimage to the distant world of Hyperion to face the Shrike, a mysterious creature that is believed to grant the wish of one of them in exchange for the lives of the others. Hoping to uncover the hidden meaning behind their pilgrimage they decide to recount each other their tales and motivations to seek out the Shrike.

Each pilgrim has his or her own connection to Hyperion and reason to journey to the Shrike. The majority of this book consists of those tales, occasionally interspersed with their progress to the Tombs of the Shrike. In this case this style of storytelling works remarkably well in forming a coherent novel as the subsequent stories of the pilgrims slowly reveal more and more about the state of human civilization and the history of the web-world, outlining a world packed with enough weirdness to keep any fan of science-fiction or fantasy writing interested. Even though most of the characters may initially not seem like very likeable people they gain depth through their tales. The style of the prose changes according to the person that tells his story, resulting in a novel that is at moments very witty, suspenseful, touching and overall very versatile. The book ends with the pilgrims reaching the Tombs of the Shrike, after which the story continues in ‘The Fall of Hyperion’.

This is a very interesting novel, unique and varied in its storytelling, captivating and very hard-to-put down. Highly recommended!

Het is zelden dat een boek waarvan je weinig verwachte een van je favorieten kan worden. Hyperion is zo'n boek. Alles lijkt gewoon te kloppen. De personages zijn geloofwaardig en invoelbaar, de stijl meeslepend, het tempo is aangenaam, de concepten interessant, en de ontknoping biedt catharsis. Ik raad iedereen dit boek van harte aan. Laat je niet weerhouden door de omslag; die kan wat kitsch en protserig overkomen maar het boek doet wat mij betreft niet onder voor het gros van de zogenaamde literatuur.

Ik heb een tijdje gedaan over Hyperion. Hoewel ik het uiteindelijk een fantastisch boek vond, was het even schakelen met het feit dat het meer leest als meerdere korte verhalen die langzaam tot één verhaal samenkomen, en daardoor prachtig met elkaar verwoven worden. Dit is ook wat zo pakkend maakt. Toch miste ik soms een meer "rechttoe, rechtaan" verhaallijn er in, want als die er eenmaal begint op te komen, eindigt het verhaal. Desalniettemin is het een unieke - en positieve - leeservaring die ik van harte aan zou bevelen voor iemand die van lezen houd. Ik wil wel echt benadrukken dat het een boek is waar je echt even voor moet zitten. Het is niet altijd even makkelijk, maar het is wel altijd interessant.

Voor de echte sic-fi liefhebber. De verhalen slepen je mee en vormen een geloofwaardige complete en complexe wereld. Het taalgebruik is mooi, maar niet altijd even makkelijk. Ik ben regelmatig woorden tegengekomen die ik moest opzoeken, dit heb ik normaal nooit met engels boeken.
