Iacta Stips Il Deposito Votivo Della Sorgente Di Doccia Della Testa a San Casciano Dei Bagni (Siena)

This volume presents the finds from a votive deposit discovered in 2004 in the waters of the thermal spring Doccia della Testa, located at San Casciano dei Bagni (Siena). Datable from 500-490 B.C. to the era of Maxentius, the deposit comprises metallic artifacts exclusively (a small marble base to which a metal sculpture had been attached also numbers among the finds). The oldest artifacts are represented by statuettes of divinities and by devotional offerings, an aes formatum and two anatomical ex votos (an ear and a breast), while from the Imperial age, a dedication of a series of coins (perhaps a unique hoard) was recovered, dating from the time of Tiberius to the middle of the third century A.D., at least until the brief reign of Trajan Decius (249-251 A.D.). The upper chronological limit of the deposit is indicated by a follis of Maxentius (309-312 A.D.) which, although it is an isolated example, proves that the spring at San Casciano was frequented into the Late Antique period. In all, the spring was in use for a period of about eight hundred years. The offerings were consigned to the watery deep as dedications to a divinity unknown to us, but whose spiritual power was focused on healing by means of the beneficial effects of the thermal water, flowing out at 41 C, containing sulfur, calcium, and magnesium, and which is also fluoridated and radioactive. The anatomical ex voto in the shape of a breast is especially interesting and nearly unique (there is one other from the sanctuary of Diana Nemorensis, cited in an excavation report of 1895, but which at present cannot be located), which bears the inscription of a freed woman with a Greek-sounding name, Eutyche, the liberated slave of one Gaius Avidienus, a patronus perhaps of Umbrian or Picenian origin. The study is complemented by an essay concerning the Roman votive inscriptions from the thermal region of San Casciano. Ce volume est consacre au materiel d un depot votif recupere en 2004 dans les eaux de la source thermale dite Doccia della Testa a San Casciano dei Bagni (Sienne). Datable d une periode comprise entre 500/490 av. J.-C. et l epoque de Maxence, ce depot est exclusivement constitue d objets metalliques (la petite base de marbre que l on distingue au milieu d eux accueillait a l origine une sculpture elle aussi enmetal). Si les documents les plus anciens sont constitues par des statuettes de divinites et d offrants, par un aes formatum et par deux ex voto anatomiques (une oreille et un sein), il faut dater de l epoque imperiale la dedicace d une serie de monnaies (peut-etre un unique thesaurus ) qui vont du regne de Tibere jusqu au milieu du IIIe siecle ap. J.-C., pour lemoins jusqu au bref imperiumde TrajanDece (249-251 ap. J.-C).Un follis de Maxence (309-312 ap. J.-C.), bien qu isole, temoigne de son cote de la frequentation de la source de San Casciano jusqu a la la fin de l antiquite tardive, soit au total pendant plus de huit cent ans. Les offrandes ont ete dediees par immersion a une divinite qui nous reste inconnue, mais dont le culte, qui visait a la sanatio, beneficiait des effets bienfaisants de l eau thermale fluoree et radioactive, riche en souffre, calcium, etmagnesium, qui jaillit a 41 C. On retiendra comme d un tres grand interet l ex voto anatomique en forme de sein, qui porte la dedicace d une affranchie au nomgrec, Eutyche, esclave affranchie par unGaius Avidienus, patronus peut-etre d origine ombro-picenienne: pratiquement un unicum (si l on fait exception de l exemplaire du sanctuaire deDiana Nemorensis, cite dans un compte-rendu de fouilles de 1895, mais actuellement non localise). L etude est completee par un essai sur les inscriptions dedicataires romaines trouvees dans la zone thermal de San Casciano, qui faisait partie de l Ager Clusinus . Im vorliegenden Band wird das Fundmaterial aus einem Votivdepot publiziert, das 2004 im Wasser der Thermalquelle von Doccia della Testa in San Casciano dei Bagni gehoben werden konnte. Die aus den Jahren 500/490 v. Chr. bis in die Zeit des spatromischen Kaisers Maxentius datierenden Funde aus dem Depot umfassen ausschliesslich Metallobjekte, zu denen erganzend eine kleine Marmorbasis hinzukommt, auf der einst ebenfalls eine Skulptur aus Metall aufgestellt war. Die fruhesten Funde sind Statuetten von Gottheiten und Adoranten, ein Stuck aes formatum und zwei anatomische Exvotos (ein Ohr und ein Brust), wahrend in die Kaiserzeit die Weihung einer Serie von Munzen gehort, moglicherweise ein einziger Hortfund, die von Kaiser Tiberius bis ins mittlere 3. Jahrhundert n. Chr. reichen, bis mindestens in die Regierungszeit des Kaisers Traianus Decius (249 - 251 n. Chr.). Der spateste Fund ist ein Follis des Kaisers Maxentius (309 - 312 n. Chr.), der obwohl es sich umeinen isolierten Fund handelt eine uber 800 Jahre dauernde Benutzung des Depots bis in Spatzeit bezeugt. Die Weihungen erfolgten durch das Versenken in das Wasser an eine uns unbekannte Gottheit, deren Wirkungsbereich in der sanatio zu suchen ist. Diese erfolgte wohl durch die wohltuenden Effekte des mit 41 C aus dem Boden sprudelnden warmen Wassers, das sulfat-, calcium-, magnesium- sowie fluorhaltig ist und radioaktive Eigenschaften aufweist. Von besonderem Interesse ist das mit einer Inschrift versehene anatomische Exvoto in Form einer Brust, bei dem es sich mit Ausnahme eines entsprechenden Fundstucks aus dem Heiligtum der Diana Nemorensis, das in einem Fundbericht von 1895 erwahnt wird aber heute verschollen ist, praktisch um ein Unikum handelt. Die Inschrift nennt eine, von einem Gaius Avidienus freigelassene Sklavin mit dem griechisch klingenden Beinamen Eutyche, einem Patronus, der moglicherweise umbrisch-picenischer Herkunft ist. Der Text wird durch eine Studie zu den romischen Votivinschriften aus dem Thermalbereich von San Casciano vervollstandigt."
