David Hume
"David Hume (/hjuːm/; born David Home; 7 May 1711 NS (26 April 1711 OS) – 25 August 1776) was a Scottish philosopher, historian, economist, and essayist, who is best known today for his highly influential system of philosophical empiricism, skepticism, and naturalism. Hume's empiricist approach to philosophy places him with John Locke, Francis Bacon and Thomas Hobbes as a British Empiricist. Beginning with his A Treatise of Human Nature (1739), Hume strove to create a total naturalistic science of man that examined the psychological basis of human nature. Against philosophical rationalists, Hume held that passion rather than reason governs human behaviour. Hume argued against the existence of innate ideas, positing that all human knowledge is founded solely in experience; Hume thus held that genuine knowledge must either be directly traceable to objects perceived in experience, or result from abstract reasoning about relations between ideas which are derived from experience, calling the rest ""nothing but sophistry and illusion"", a dichotomy later given the name Hume's fork.
Investigación sobre el entendimiento humano (original en inglés: An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding), es un libro del filósofo empirista escocés, David Hume el cual publicó en 1748. Este libro contiene revisiones de los puntos principales de libro Tratado sobre la naturaleza humana también obra de David Hume (aunque publicado de manera anónima en Londres entre 1739-1740). Hume estaba desmoralizado por la pobre recepción del Tratado, el cual según sus palabras "nació muerto desde la imprenta,",1 y por lo tanto intentó nuevamente propalar sus ideas al público y para ello escribió un libro más corto y más polémico. El resultado de sus esfuerzos fue la Investigación (en inglés: Enquiry). En la Investigación eliminó gran parte del material del Tratado, para clarificar y enfatizar sus aspectos más importantes. Por ejemplo, se han eliminado las opiniones de Hume sobre la identidad personal. Sin embargo, se conservaron otras proposiciones más importantes, tales como la postura de Hume en cuanto al rol del habit en una teoría del conocimiento. Este libro ha ejercido una gran influencia, tanto en la época en la que se lo publicó como en la actualidad. Immanuel Kant lo identifica como el libro que lo despertó de su autodenominado "dogmatic slumber".2 La Investigación es ampliamente considerado un clásico en la literatura filosófica moderna.
