This is one of those books that doesn't let you go after you've finished reading it.
When start reading it you're not at all surtain you want to finish it, because you don't like any of the characters. But as the story goes on you start to feel something close to simpathy for Adam. You see that he's just an ambitious young man who gets sucked into the whirlpool of Rudolf Born.
And with the way the story is told, you get sucked into that one year of Adam Walker's life.
You feel all the things he feels, you see the world the way he sees it. That is how Paul Auster makes you feel, like you could be an Adam. And by the time the story is finished you still don't like the young man, but that's because he's an anti-hero, it's because he's so obviously human.
The only negative point of this book is the ending, because somehow it doesn't feel right not to end the book with Walker. And on the whole it doesn't ad anything to the story, it's almost as if Auster added those last pages to make a pagenumber target.
