Jennifer nearly dies after capturing the last of the evil sociopathic mages known as Bad Souls. She becomes famous, but that is not a blessing. Almost all United Kingdom mages know about her abilities to identify and disable criminals from a distance. The Free Mage Movement developed grandiose plans to overthrow the mage government and then the government of the United Kingdom. The FMM's leaders correctly fear that Jennifer will capture them as easily as she captured Bad Souls. The revolutionary leaders make a desperate attempt to protect themselves from Jennifer by kidnapping Jennifer's apprentice, Lahni Kurban, and her younger brother Greg. Jennifer and Lahni use powers the FMM leaders don't know about. They incapacitate the kidnappers, unearth the leaders, and escape. Jennifer captures all the revolutionaries in three days. Once again, her success leads to difficulties. She's libelled by all three mage media outlets that want to cut down a powerful mage (now that the murderers and violent revolutionaries are safely in prison). Because of media libel, most mages believe she abused her powers. Some want Jennifer imprisoned, and some want to force Lahni to be apprenticed to a different master.


Jennifer's problems continue when she discovers that ten mages want to assassinate her simply because Jennifer's powers greatly exceed their own. Four groups of assassins all decide to move quickly because they will spend years in prison for conspiracy to commit murder if they don't kill Jennifer now.


Jennifer justifiably becomes angry about how other mages treat her, and her anger fuels the fragment of the curse nightmare that she has not destroyed. The fragment grows, and it could drive Jennifer mad and capture her soul. She resolves to change her personality to one that doesn't feed off anger. She also tries to take things that make her angry and redirect them to things she dislikes. She becomes skilled at meditation and the examination of her subconscious.


Not all is bleak in Jennifer's life. She has strong love from Lahni and is treated like a family member by the Kurbans. Her friend Jason establishes a small group home for orphaned mages. The four children behave well, and Jennifer and Lahni greatly enjoy their frequent visits. Jennifer and Lahni also visit hospital patients. Lahni has great rapport with elderly patients, especially those who are alone and dying. She loves her visits as much as the patients do. Lahni and Jennifer save lives by transferring the lifeforces of dying patients to sick patients. They get permission to study what happens to lifeforce and souls when a person dies. Jennifer believes that Sarah's and Sergei's souls cured her catatonia. Jennifer hopes to learn how they did that and use the method to cure other mental disorders.


Jennifer enjoys acting as taxi between Lahni and her two mage friends, Lydia and Ellie. Jennifer happily notes that Lahni and Lydia are almost as close as Jennifer was to Sarah. Lahni invites all her friends and nearby relatives to her magic fireworks show on Guy Fawkes day. Jennifer believes that it was the best fireworks show in history.


Jennifer and Lahni learn to read thoughts and then memories. They learn to send memories. Lahni retrieves memories of Sarah from Jennifer. Jennifer relives those memories, but she no longer gets sad. However, Jennifer screams when Sarah's soul contacts Lahni. Jennifer knows that Lahni will be hurt by whatever Sarah requests. Sarah describes a problem that must be fixed or man will become extinct. Fixing the problem requires great sacrifices from Jennifer and greater sacrifices from Lahni. Lahni, with Jennifer's help, has four months to strengthen her soul and develop new magic. Part of the process for strengthening her soul is that twelve-year-old Lahni, who has barely started puberty, must become pregnant.
