Michael Gazzaniga presenta qui un riesame complessivo di quanto la scienza ha scoperto finora in materia di coscienza. L’idea che il cervello sia una macchina, comparsa secoli fa, ha indotto a immaginare il rapporto tra mente e cervello in forme che continuano a paralizzare gli studiosi. Gazzaniga è convinto che quel modello funzioni a rovescio: il cervello è capace di costruire macchine, ma non può essere ridotto a una macchina. Le scoperte più recenti inducono piuttosto a rappresentarlo come una federazione di moduli indipendenti che operano in parallelo.
