Jesmyn Ward
Jesmyn Ward (1977) groeide op in armoede in een gehucht langs de kust van Mississippi, waar ze in 2005 de orkaan Katrina ternauwernood overleefde. Ze was de eerste in haar familie die ging studeren. Ward won de National Book Award in 2011 voor haar roman Salvage the Bones. Ze schreef ook de memoir Men We Reaped, een klaaglied voor vijf jonge zwarte mannen uit haar omgeving die een gewelddadige dood stierven.
