Born in Boston, she studied at Smith College and Newnham College at the University of Cambridge before receiving acclaim as a poet and writer. She married fellow poet Ted Hughes in 1956, and they lived together in the United States and then in England. They had two children, Frieda and Nicholas, before separating in 1962.

Er is veel over haar geschreven en geïnterpreteerd. Deze brieven geven, samen met haar dagboeken een mooi en gedetailleerd inzicht in haar leven & denken. Weg met alle analyses van iedereen, vorm je eigen beeld, maak zelf je verhaal! Opmerkelijk op het eerste gezicht dat dit allemaal bewaard is gebleven, al lezende kom je er ook achter dat ze zich erg bewust was van haar eigen talent(en).
Prachtig tijdsbeeld wordt er ondertussen ook geschetst, vooral het verschil in ( materiële) welvaart tussen de VS en het naoorlogse West-Europa.
