Never a dull moment with Len Deighton’s 1.141 page trilogy “Game, Set and Match”. Set during 1984-5, the books are situated in Berlin, Mexico City and London. They are not action thrillers, but deadly violence occurs in each of them. What enchants this reader is the craft of spying, devious office politics in London Central (MI-6) and the gulf between practitioners and the people managing them, often without field experience. This trilogy’s British class-based perceptions and the issues they cause on the work floor guarantee great reading pleasure. The trilogy’s novels can be read separately but linear reading is advised.
What is at stake in Part 3? Bernard Samson (BS), hero of the two earlier books, finds himself still in limbo. [He is a field agent who barely survived an exit from East Germany in 1978 and has been deskbound since, despite occasional forays abroad.] In "Berlin Game" his wife and colleague Fiona turned out to be a KGB mole. She fled London just in time. In Mexico Set", BS managed despite heavy odds provided by London Central, to enroll in Mexico City the Russian KGB major Erich Stinnes, Fiona’s assistant in East Berlin, now the KGB Resident with the rank of colonel.]
Readers enjoying subtle tales about spying operations and Machiavellian office politics will find this a treat. Although BS is said to be beyond suspicion about his wife’s defection, his superiors test him repeatedly in "London Match". BS suspects another KGB mole among them, capable to snatch his children away to Moscow and ruin his reputation forever...
