Ivan Klíma (1931) overleefde als kind tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog het concentratiekamp Theresienstadt. In de jaren vijftig begon hij met schrijven. In 1967 hield hij een rede tegen de censuur in zijn land. Hij verloor zijn baan, zijn boeken werden verboden, waardoor ze uitsluitend in het vrije Westen konden worden uitgebracht. Na de Fluwelen Revolutie van 1989 vroeg Václav Havel hem minister te worden, maar Klíma gaf er de voorkeur aan 'zijn land en literatuur te dienen als onbezoldigd cultureel ambassadeur'. Wereldbibliotheek heeft sinds 1987 acht boeken van hem uitgegeven.
