Samenvatting
P R E F A C E . IN presenting Magical Programmea to the Conjuring fraternity, I wish it to be distinctly understood by all - readers, that I do not claim to be the author of all the patter contained therein. In some instances I have simply introduced the patter which is bought with the trick. I have refrained from disclosing the secret of any trick contained in this little volume, as this is not a treatise on Magic, but, as its title implies, is a book on Magical Programmes, and How to Present Them. I have no knowledge of the publication of a similar book, and in my career as a performer, extending over many years, I have met many enthusiasts in the Magic Art, who have been expert Conjurers, but who have been unable to present their tricks in a satisfactory sequence. This book will appeal especially to them. There are others who, in all probability, will find within its pages a few hints that will assist them in presenting their programmes in a more fitting, pleasing, and successful hanner. Should this prove to be the case, Magical Pro grammes will have achieved its object. DE MEGLIO, Eccles. November, 1914. S I M U L A T E D D E X T E R I T Y . THE next best thing to actual skill is the apparent possession of it and it is with this important point in mind that the following programmes have been arranged. Real success, however, depends upon the presentation. To know the secrets, and to go mechanically through their prescribed routine is not sufficient. Every movement has to be made as though it were the most natural thing in the world to do it that particular way. Every trick should appear to be the result of the Conjurers innate ability. More than this, the execution of the tricksshould be made interesting an entertaining. It is also necessary to exercise misdirection that is, the providing of a plausible excuse in order to divert attention from the true method, for the wonders accomplished. In order to assist the young magician, the complete effect of each programme is given in descriptive form as seen by a spectator. This will enable anyone to select tricks suited to his own taste and style, and in the event of his already possessing some of the items, the following descriptions will show what others will best blend to form an agreeable entertainment. ALTHOUGH the Professional Conjurer appears in Evening A Dress, it must not be assumed by the Amateur that this is absolutely essential. An ordinary 6ounge Suit will be found as serviceable and as useful for informal entertainments such as amongst his own friends, School entertainments, Smokers, etc., but when he has attained proficiency, he should by all means appear in Evening Dress. By being able to perform in ordinary dress, the effect sometimes appears more startling, and as the success of the entertainment depends upon the presentation of the tricks, the Amateur should cultivate a natural manner no matter whether he be in Morning Dress or Evening Dress., The performer, having selected the programme most suitable to his idea, should master each trick separately in the given order, and the materials required for the trick should be placed upon the table in such a manner as to be entirely separate from the second trick. Having mastered the first trick, practice the second trick, this should be placed close to the first, and so on through the programme. The performer will have the eyes of the audience upon him, so there must be no hesitancy. The tricks must be well practiced beforehand and rehearsed in the same order i is intended to show them. l He must have every confidence in himself, and when complete confidence is acquired in handling the apparattls, success must follow his effozts. The effects given in the various programmes are as seen by the audience...
