Nicholas Vincent's little book provides a witted explanation of the political context in which the Magna Carta was first published. Vincent starts with a historical review of the Plantagenet dynasty, to which King John "Lackland" belonged, listing the reasons why those kings entered history with a reputation for cruelty and tyranny. King John, however, went beyond all limits: he was a terrible politician with his own barons and broke up with the Catholic Church. Magna Carta was born as a peace agreement, and as suh it failed: civil war was not avoided, and it was only won by the Crown after King John's death. But Magna Carta had made its inauguration and its fame was well established. Throughout the 13th century it was reissued a few times and can be regarded as a founding document against tyranny and protective of individual liberties.
