When I started my career in sales two decades ago, it was a time where training and development as a department was not very prominent in our country nor were the availability of trainers and coaches to help the new hires to understand the process of the tricks of the trade as they are available today. The training that was provided to be both on the product and the selling skills part was imparted to be by my manager’s. So, he was playing multiple roles. Yes, I did learn from him, and went ahead and executed what he asked me to do without any questions asked. Yes, it worked for me as I believe it would have, for many of you. I am sure our managers would have learnt the same from their managers or would have evolved as a better salesperson with experience. Having said this I did not really know if that is how it was really supposed to happen? Or to be done”, is this proven? are these the best ways of selling? Is this the best way to sell the product? The most important thing that was running in my head was why am I supposed to do this the way I was asked to do? I mostly did not get an answer for that question, the question of “Why” am I supposed to do it this way only?

Then as I moved into training and development in my carrier, I was forced to ask this question to myself. I started seeking answers to questions that I didn’t not have an answer to when I was doing my job in sales. I did this because my current role as a trainer demanded me to do this. I could not face people for a training program without having an answer to the question of “Why am I supposed to do this? Why this way? and many more”. This made me uncover more information about sales and selling skills. The art part of selling along with the science part of selling. Then I went on to execute a lot training program on Sales across the country for more than a decade. I thoroughly enjoyed my stint as a corporate trainer in Sales. I was blessed to be associated with may many industries like Telcom, Hospitality, BPO, Construction and currently as a consultant to top corporates. This decade of experience in sales training made me understand that immaterial of the industry that you work in, the selling process is the same only with little changes done to the process as per the industry requirements.
