Stephen Hawking was een Brits natuurkundige, kosmoloog en wiskundige en wordt beschouwd als een van ’s werelds grootste denkers. Dertig jaar lang bekleedde hij de positie van Lucasian Professor of Mathematics aan de Universiteit van Cambridge. Hij schreef vele boeken, waaronder A Brief History of Time, dat een internationale bestseller werd. Daarin legde Hawking op toegankelijke wijze de volledige geschiedenis van het gehele universum uit. Daarnaast schreef hij samen met zijn dochter Lucy Hawking een kinderboekenserie over wetenschap, George’s Secret Key to the Universe. Stephen Hawking overleed op 14 maart 2018.
