Jeremy Bentham

John Stuart Mill (1806 - 73) formed the Utilitarian Society which met to read and discuss essays. His works include On Liberty and Principles of Political Economy.

Samenvatting

The book has an active table of contents for easy access to each chapter.

Jeremy Bentham was a British philosopher, jurist, social reformer and the founder of modern utilitarianism. He is in the row with the greatest thinkers Adam Smith, John Stuart Mill, John Keynes, John Locke, and Alfred Marshall. Their thoughts had strong influence on building the foundation of the United States and its endeavor of open society.

Jeremy Bentham invented the axiom of the greatest happiness of the greatest number. His writings emphasised the pursuit of happiness and freedom and became popular in the new republics of America and the other counties.

In the letters of the book, Jeremy Bentham argued the two most important things. The first one was his statement of policy about the freedom of the press in criticizing government officials. It would seem to be about as far as one can go to get rid of prosecutions for seditious libel. The second one was the radical statement of policy about sufficient freedom of public political association to permit effective resistance to government authority. Bentham was considering representative governments as a check on misrule, constitutional arrangements which make possible active resistance to government actions or outright insurrection. The letters are Jeremy Bentham’s answer to “Absolute power corrupts absolutely”. His major contribution to the freedom of the press provided the sound foundation for UK and the United States.

Jeremy Bentham’s work produced great influence on utilitarianism, philosophy, jurist, and economics. His influence has been felt in nearly every field of the humanities and social sciences.

This book is one of the most important ones about the deepest thoughts of the freedom of the press and government by Jeremy Bentham, one of the greatest thinkers of modern economics and philosophy on the planet.
