Othello is a tragedy by William Shakespeare that tells the story of a noble Moorish general who falls victim to the manipulations of his jealous ensign, Iago. Othello is married to Desdemona, a beautiful and virtuous Venetian lady, who loves him sincerely. Iago, who hates Othello for passing him over for a promotion, plots to ruin his marriage and reputation by making him believe that Desdemona is having an affair with Cassio, Othello’s loyal lieutenant. Iago uses various tricks and lies to convince Othello of Desdemona’s infidelity, such as planting a handkerchief that belongs to her in Cassio’s room. Othello becomes consumed by doubt and rage, and eventually smothers Desdemona in their bed. When he learns the truth about Iago’s scheme, he is overcome by remorse and kills himself. The play explores themes such as jealousy, racism, betrayal, love, and revenge.
