vaarwel en begint de punkgroep Riff Raff, waarvan een Ep op Chiswick verschijnt. Na dertien
ambachten, waaronder drie maanden als tankchauffeur in het Engelse leger, besluit hij letterlijk als
solo-artiest op te gaan treden. De mini-elpee Life'S A Riot With Spy Vs. Spy wordt in drie middagen
opgenomen en is bedoeld als demo, maar voert wekenlang de onafhankelijke elpeelijst aan en
gaat in meer dan 50 000 exemplaren over de toonbank. Ook Brewing Up With Billy Bragg bevat
rudimentaire liefdesliedjes met een politieke lading, nog altijd zonder bas en drums. Als
rechtgeaard solo-socialist speelt Billy benefietoptredens voor de Campaign For Nuclear
Disarmament, het Miners' Support Fund en doet hij mee aan de Jobs And Industry-tournee van
de Labourpartij. Met de Ep Between The Wars en Kirsty MacColls versie van A New England haalt
Bragg begin '85 de 'officiële' hitparade. Na de kerstsingle Days Like These is Bragg betrokken bij
de 'Red Wedge Tour' ter ondersteuning van Labour-kandidaat Neil Kinnock. Bovendien treedt hij
op in verschillende Oostbloklanden. Als muzikant en liedjesschrijver overtreft hij zichzelf met de
single Levi Stubbs' Tears en het veelzijdige Talking With The Taxman About Poetry, waaraan o.a.
wordt meegewerkt door gitarist Johnny Marr van The Smiths. Een BBC-sessie uit '83, opgenomen
voor het radioprogramma van John Peel, komt in '87 uit in de EP-serie The Peel Sessions. In
augustus formeert Bragg opnieuw Riff Raff.
