REHABILITATION OF THE RIVER RHINE Proceedings of the International Conference on Rehabilitation of the River Rhine, held in Arnhem, The Netherlands, 15-19 March 1993 The Rhine suffered severely from pollution over the last two centuries. Industrial eflluents and mumeipal wastewaters umposed ever greater pollutant loads, and major engineering works lor drainage and navigation were carried out with little understanding of their ecological impacts. Mare recently considerable international efforts have been made to rescue the Rhine from its detenoraton. In parucular, in 1987 the Rhine Action Programme was initiated with the ecologrcal rehabilitation of the Rhine as one of its four objectives. This was the focus of this conference. Sixty papers have been selected, covering many aspects of the Rhine ecosystem: biological communittes in the river as affected by environmental chauges; emission and fate of pollutants, accidental spills their control and clean-up; ecotoxicological eflects; restoration of fish stucks and floodplamn ecosystems; ecological river engineering. Comparative studies wich other major nver systems arc featured. The issue ends with the Conclusions and Recommendations of the conference. These proceedings will be valued by scientists, engineers, regulators and policy-makers; whether their interest is the Rhine specifically or another of the world's great rivers, they will find essential work on river basin management, ecology, pollution impacts and control measures.
