Samenvatting
Many small rivers zig zag their way through Africa. ‘Rivulets’ is a book that follows the path of one such river as a young man tracks the river to a better life. He realizes that the river can be more than meandering body of water and that it can provide for him and his village fish that can transform their lives.
Ocha, the young man, lives in a typical African village where farming and herding are the order of the day. He rebels against this order by embarking on a fishing mission. As he fishing grows, he expands his fishing territory and market reach. All this happens through the help of Rosa, a young lady that he meets and falls in love with. She pushes him to fish in a bigger river and sells the increased fish in a bigger market. Together, they attract a prosperity that had previously eluded their.
Rivulets shows how the crystal blue waters of the river are teeming with gold, namely fish. The book narrates how two young people tap into this gold and change their lives by embracing innovative strategies.
Rosa is a feisty character who grabs the marketing steering wheel of their two-person venture. Her tenacity and tact ensure huge fish sales. The multiplied sales inspire Ocha to catch a multiplied number of fish. In this regard, ‘Rivulets’ is about small actions resulting in big things, the same way that rivulets result in big rivers that result in vast oceans.
The book’s narrative also encompasses the familial strengths that make extraordinary action possible. Life in an African village is one of the most misunderstood things. It is either romanticized or misrepresented. The book attempts to strike a balance by laying out both the difficulties and opportunities in the village.
