  • Asimov’s fourth Robot novel

‘Robots and Empire’ is the fourth book in Asimov’s The Robot series and the only one in the series that is not an Elijah Baley crime novel. The main storyline is about the Settlers and the Spacers and their struggle for control of the Galaxy. It takes place at about a century-and-a-half after the death of Baley who nevertheless makes several appearances through the many flashbacks featured in the early parts of the book. From all of Asimov’s novels set in the Foundation Universe this is perhaps the one that most clearly demonstrates the shortcomings of the Three Laws of Robotics. Throughout the length of the novel one witnesses how Daneel and Giskard become increasingly aware of these shortcomings, culminating in the formulation of a new and overruling Zeroth Law. What follows is a difficult process of acceptance of this new law as well as an investigation of its consequences, whereby a connection is established with psychohistory, the mental science that is of fundamental importance in Asimov’s Foundation Trilogy. It will be very satisfying to discover the profound effects that Elijah Baley has had on the people around him (in particular on Daneel) and the pivotal role that the characters of The Robot series turn out to have played in shaping mankind’s future course in the Galaxy. ‘Robots and Empire’ brilliantly connects The Robot, The Galactic Empire and The Foundation series and in so doing impressively elevates the individual serials to a higher level. ‘Robots and Empire’ is a vital addition to Asimov’s future-history canon and an absolute must-read! Note, however, that if one has the intention of reading Asimov’s Foundation trilogy and its sequels one is heartily advised to do so before reading this novel.
