Diaspar, the last city inhabited by the human race, has remained closed from the outside world and the fingers of time for more than a billion years. Its inhabitants are perfectly content with this stagnated state of existence except for young Alvin who, driven by a primal desire for adventure, will not let himself be confined by the walls of his native city.
In several aspects one can notice that Clarke’s writing went through a great deal of developing in the period between this book and the ‘Rendezvous’ and ‘Odyssey’ novels. First of all is the writing: Although it is more than decent it is also just that, where in contrast in his later work the prose can on occasion really impress. The same holds true for the storytelling. Most prominent in this respect is the use of the outdated plot device of spending nearly the entire length of the book in adding to the mystery only to have a wise person at the end of the story come along to explain (nearly) everything. Also the characters somehow never really strike an emotional chord the way that Bowman and Heywood did. As a result ‘The City and the Stars’ is not quite as overpowering as Rendezvous or Odyssey. However, this in no way excludes that it is nonetheless a highly enjoyable book with a very interesting theme: the story is built on some fascinating ideas that are as authentic and original as we have come to expect from Arthur C Clarke. Some of his visions on possible evolutionary paths of consciousness that are proposed here reappear in slightly altered form in his later Space Odyssey books. Most of all ‘The City and the Stars’ could serve as the perfect introduction to Clarke’s later work. People that are already familiar with that can certainly also enjoy this book as long as one does not expect another classic of the unattainably grandiose proportions of ‘Rendezvous’ or ‘2001’.Vond je dit een nuttige review?20 -

Elke avond een stukje lezen. Spannend verhaal (maar, je weet WIE het schreef) heerlijk geschreven met de juiste hoeveelheid ingrediënten spanning en ontspanning...aanschaffen dat boek als je van top scifi houdt!!!
