Emma has been in love with Jack since she was a girl, but nothing ever came of it and she's not a child anymore; she's raising one of her own and growing up means letting go of childhood dreams. But when Jack returns home to Alabama for the first time in a decade, Emma realizes that she's never stopped dreaming and Jack realizes that that he's spent his life looking for something that he'd already left behind. When Jack delivers the news that he's not expected to live another year, Emma is devastated.
