    Helder en pakkend geschreven overzicht van de geschiedenis van Sicilië. Een enorm rijke geschiedenis waarin je makkelijk kunt struikelen over de vele namen en gebeurtenissen. Norwich houdt het overzichtelijk.

    Geschreven bij Sicily

    Norwich schrijft soepel maar laat zijn verhaal te zeer kleuren door multiculturalisme - hij barst uit in jubelzangen als een Siciliaanse vorsten moslimgeleerden uitnodigt, en verzwijgt bijna helemaal de verlammende werking van islamitische piraterij op het eiland. Daarnaast draait het allemaal erg veel om heersers en rijken, andere zaken (bijv. het leven van de gewone man) komen er bekaaid van af.
