  • Three short stories from Clarke’s early career.

‘The Space Trilogy’ is a collection of three of Clarke’s first SF short stories. Although his later work is typified by increasingly mindboggling themes, the stories collected here are relatively more mundane. The first two do not have an obvious plot or even a clue or climax. Rather it seems that most of all they were intended to warm the audience of the early 1950’s, an era before manned spaceflight, to space travel. Indeed, to properly value these stories one has to keep in mind the time in which they were written.

The first one, ‘Islands in the Sky’, is a novel for young adults about 16 year old Roy Malcolm who wins a holiday to a space station. The story is penned in first person style as Roy recounts his experiences afterwards. Clarke’s writing style spot on reflects what one would expect from a teenage boy, which coincidently means that this is exactly what this story has to offer: the holiday report of a sixteen year old kid.

The second story, ‘Sands of Mars’, recounts the tale of Martin Gibson, a novelist who is selected to be the first space tourist to the colony on Mars. Although it has become somewhat dated by the current state of knowledge this is nonetheless a highly enjoyable novel, chiefly due to the wonderful set of characters that Clarke has created. Most notable in that respect is Martin whose adventure to a new world quite unexpectedly becomes a journey of self-discovery and personal revelation.

The last story, ‘Earthlight’, is part space detective, part thriller and part future historical treatise. Compared to the previous book there is less emphasis on character development, but this is compensated by a strongly increased degree of tension. In addition this novel will occasionally impress with graceful prose and inspiring metaphors.

Certainly ‘Sands of Mars’ and ‘Earthlight’ are each worth the price of admission and give a good hint why Arthur C Clarke is the best SF author in history. Recommended.

  • Een vermakelijk stukje science fiction

    Positieve punten

    • Fantasierijk
    • Focus op wetenschap en techniek

    Negatieve punten

    • Beetje achterhaald
