Gergard Wolf is a boy of nine when his infant brother dies, he believes he is responsible for Hans’s death. This is s secret he carries with him until he graduates from high school. Gergard falls in love with his teacher Matilda Ainsworth, who introduces the wonders of computers to him. Gergard is a genius, and Matilda tutors him for free, in actual fact, she was hired to teach Gergard.

Gergard’s family are impoverished, they live on a few potatoes a day. That is when the long winters don’t cover the land in a blanket of snow. Fynn Wolf rules the family, he kept many secrets from Gergard, who believes a Nymph lives in the river near the house, and that a ghost lives in his bedroom. Gergard is convinced he killed his baby brother, he believed he saved him from an awful life.

Fynn Wolf was a double agent, and a bigamist, but “They’ turned a blind eye to his personal life, as long as he stole from Gergard. Fynn remains a main character throughout the book. Gergard is the main character, the story revolves around his childhood, and his adult life. Gergard is oblivious to ‘Them’, a secrect sect, that did experiments on human subjects, ‘They’ wanted to create the perfect weapon, and Gergard helped ‘Them’ against his will, he created ADAM 2, a computer, that with the push of a button would destroy an entire town. Gergard does escape, and discovers, that his American bodyguard is is biological brother, and his Software Engineer is Crane’s half brother.

They are not sure if they could trust each other, Gergard didn’t trust anyone, he was plagued by nightmares, and he was convinced he had killed Matilda and their unborn child. Crane or George, as Gergard first gets to know him, is an ex Seal, he was sent by his ‘Boss’ to findout exactly who Gergard Wolf was.

Fynn Wolf is arrested on charges of espionage, he narrates his life story while being held captive, he tells the story of his first love, his first wife, and the wives to follow, in the background the lady in the river stays a main character, no one is qiute sure what she is. Fynn was a bigamist, the worst part is, he fell in love with his sisters and his daughters, and married them to produce the perfect child.

He only had two sons that turned out normal, Benard and Klaus. Klaus worked for Gergard when he opened up his own business, called Wolfsrudel. However Benard and Klaus pay the price for their knowledge. They both paid with their lives, eventually so did Fynn Wolf, when ‘They’ used ADAM 2, on him and Klaus. Benard gets turned into a ‘robotic’ man, an android, all that remained of him that was human was his heart, his brain and his face.

Gergard is captured, and ‘They’ take their revenge after he escaped. The lady in the river saved his life numerous times, for a while it was thought Fynn Wolf had killed Gergard when he found out he didn’t inherit a cent. All Fynn wanted was money, he didn’t care about his wives nor his disabled children, in the end the son he thought he had killed, created the divice that melted his flesh from his bones.

For a while Gergard, Crane and John try to live normal lives, yet they are caught in a web, that takes them back to Baden, Crane tries to save the lady of the river, they don’t quite findout what she is, the first time they rescue her, the second time not much of her was left, and Gergard’s son, whom he didn’t kill, are taken, Gergard, John and Crane tried to save them, but Morgan begged to be killed, he was merely a torso with a beating heart and a formidable mind.

Crane is under the impression he had killed the lady of the river, whom they refere to as Sadie. She is saved by ‘Them’ and modified, she went and lived in Fynn Wolf’s brothers house in Baden hoping Gergard would find her.

Gergard and Crane returned to Baden to confront Kobold, they discover he is only a man, dying of cancer, he was a soldier in the last War, and he had one living daughter whom he doted on, Margaret von Burg, she was repeatedly abused by Fynn and Rolf Wolf, Father and son. Herman von Burg, tells Gergard the truth about Sadie, she was actually Adele Wolf the first baby, Fynn Wolf threw in the river, because he thought she was retarded, ‘They’ saved her life, and experimented on her since a young age. She was in love with Gergard. When he discovered there were no blood relation between them , she hoped he would find her.

Gergard returns to Baden one last time. He rescues Adele, and falls in love with her, but her intensions are not pure, Gergard nearly kills her with his bare hands when he finds out about her deceit. Crane tries to help him pick up the pieces of his life, and Adele is returned to Baden.

‘They’ are a factor throughout the book, their true identity is not revealed, only a few names are revealed, and Crane goes after them, the one man’s brother loses everything, Andore Novak plans his revenge against the trio, he is wounded by Gergard whom reveals the truth about his brother Gleb to him. Andore becomes part of the family, he works with John and Gergard.

Crane persuades Gergard to take Adele back, to make amends and to start a new life together. Crane’s best friend Henry Wilson lost his leg in a war, Gergard had fitted him with a prostatic that is connected to his own brain waves. Much as Gergard’s body works on his brain waves.

Crane pays a PI to find his lost love Angela, after he convinced Gergard to take Adele back. Henry is hired to fetch Adele from Baden, but ‘They’ had warned her never to set a foot out of Germany, so instead of bringing Adele home, Henry had to bury her.

Gergard accepts his fate, he thought she was better off in death, he hoped things would work out for Crane and Angela. Angela does arrive on Crane’s doorstep, but this is under pretence, she worked for ‘Them’.

Gergard is killed, and Crane, John and Andore are experimented on, they are kept alive via machines, their arms and legs were removed, soon to be fitted with new bodies, a long time back, Crane decided, that he would accept his fate, if he was turned into a being like Gergard, only if one of his brothers survived.

Subterfuge is just that, it will intrigue and vex the reader, it allows the mind to examine its own mortality. Gergard is a stunning creaction, a man with a heart of gold, a disturbed soul, due to the chemicals ‘They’ released into him for many years. Once he is free of the mind altering substances, does he find the man he wants to be, under the guidance of his older brother Crane.

Crane remains a prominent character, right until the end. Crane was the strength Gergard needed to face his childhood, and to unravel the truth about Fynn Wolf, a narsasist, a man Gergard called father. Gergard, John and Crane share the same biological Father, he is mentioned as the master mind behind the gruesome experiments, but he is not a main character, neither is his brother Vincent, Crane’s Boss.

Gergard Webber will leave a lasting impression. As a man with a heart inside a manipulated body.
