He describes his efforts to sort myth from reality and his encounters with the colourful characters he meets along the way: spies, ex-spies, terrorists, hackers, editors, patriots, defectors, jihad warriors, scientists and militant clerics. At the climax of the book, he reveals details of a covert sting operation that resulted in the acquisition of a cache of video and audio tapes showing terrorist suspects attending secret meetings in London.
