Grandmaster Flash
Grandmaster Flash heet eigenlijk Joseph Saddler en wordt
tegen het eind van de jaren vijftig geboren op het eiland Barbados. Hij groeit op in de Newyorkse
Bronx, waar rappen tot het vermaak van de straatjeugd behoort. Van jongsaf heeft Saddler de
ambitie om discjockey te worden, maar zijn scratch-methode (het naadloos in elkaar mixen van
verschillende platen door er met de hand een enkele 'beat' vanaf te halen) wordt aanvankelijk
niet zo gewaardeerd in de clubs. Met zijn vrienden Melvin Glover ('Melle Mel'), Eddie Morris
('Mr. Ness'), Guy Williams ('Raheem'), Robert Wiggins ('Cowboy') en Danny Glover ('Creole')
vormt Saddler de rapgroep The Younger Generation en neemt daarmee in '79 de 12 inch 'We Rap
More Mellow' op. De plaat klinkt van geen kanten, maar trekt toch de aandacht van Sylvia 'Pillow
Talk' Robinson, die het rap-label Sugarhill Records bestiert. Onder haar hoede en met
medewerking van o.a. Sugarhill Gang-percussionist Duke Bootee wordt The Adventures Of
Grandmaster Flash On The Wheels Of Steel opgenomen, een spetterende demonstratie van
Saddler's scratch-kwaliteiten, waarbij Blondie's 'Rapture', Queen's 'Another One Bites The Dust'
en Chic's 'Good Times' als hoofdthema's dienen. De groepsnaam is inmiddels gewijzigd in
Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five en als zodanig scoort men in '82 een enorme
Amerikaanse hit met het nummer 'The Message'. In tegenstelling tot de meeste raps is 'The
Message' sterk sociaal getint. Het nummer verwoordt de realiteit van het leven in een getto, van
de verpaupering in de grote stad. Het hitsucces slaat ook over naar Engeland en het plaatje bereikt
in '83 zelfs de Nederlandse Top 10. De gelijknamige elpee The Message haalt echter nergens het
niveau van de single en lijkt een voortvloeisel van het succes, dat de groep voorjaar '83 ook naar
Nederland brengt voor een optreden in Utrecht.
