Charles Fort

"Born in Albany, New York, on August 6, 1874, CHARLES FORT made his life's work the study of unexplained phenomena. After achieving modest success as a short story writer and novelist, Fort began studying anomalous phenomena. In 1919 he published his landmark of paranormal exploration, The Book of the Damned, which influenced generations of writers. Fort moved to London in 1924 to consult the archives at the British Museum, then returned to the United States in 1926. At the New York Public Library he continued his research into spontaneous combustion, space ships, poltergeists, and other experiences and events that had been written off by science. Fort published three additional books on the unexplained: New Lands (1923), Lo! (1931), and Wild Talents (1932).  Though his work attracted controversy, Fort was celebrated in The New York Times as ""the enfant terrible of science"" and he counted novelist Theodore Dreiser among his closest friends and literary admirers. Fort's name was made into an adjective-- fortean--to describe strange phenomena. A lasting influence on the evolution of science fiction as well as science, Fort stands as one of the most fascinating and polarizing figures in all of Americana. He died on May 3, 1932, in New York City."

Book Of The Dammed
Synopsis
Dealing with various types of anomalous phenomena including UFOs, strange falls of both organic and inorganic materials from the sky, odd weather patterns, the possible existence of creatures generally held to be mythological, disappearances of people under strange circumstances, and many other phenomena, the book is historically considered to be the first written in the specific field of anomalistics.

Wild Talents
Synopsis
This was the last book published by Charles Fort. The ‘Wild Talents’ in the title refers to things such as dowsing, fire-starters, telekinesis, etc, as well as poltergeists. An interesting thing about this book is that Fort proposes that people with these capabilities will be eventually used by the military. In 1933, this idea was no doubt laughable, but we all know now that the Military did indeed delve into the realms of remote viewing and parapsychology.

New Lands
Synopsis
The second book published by Charles Fort, New Lands deals with subjects close to the Fortean heart, such as weird fallings from the sky and UFO reports, some of which were multiple sightings over various areas. The information in this book is interesting anyway, but especially for the fact that we can see how sightings in the sky in the past, were passed off by officials as pretty much the same things they are passed off as today, i.e., anything but UFO’s.

Lo!
Synopsis
Originally published in 1931, this was Forts third book, detailing paranormal and generally weird phenomena. The book goes into detail on cryptozoology (including the Jersey Devil and various out of place animals), animal mutilations and attacks on people, strange swarming of balls, the appearance of various strange people from nowhere (the famous cases of Princess Caraboo and Kaspar Hauser), and the mysterious disappearances of others (including the diplomat Benjamin Bathurst, and vessels such as the Mary Celeste, Carroll A. Deering, and USS Cyclops, presaging later interest in the Bermuda Triangle phenomenon). He also wrote an extensive chapter on the winter of 1904-5 in Britain, when a widespread religious revival in England and Wales coincided with numerous other strange occurrences: the appearances of ghosts, poltergeists, a few purported cases of Spontaneous Human Combustion, and a ravenous wolf (or perhaps werewolf) mutilating sheep and other farm animals in Northumberland."

"It is not possible to define. Nothing has ever been finally found out. Because there is nothing final to find out.
