Op de titel afgaand dacht ik dat dit boek zou gaan over hoe onze hersenen functioneren en waardoor dit functioneren wordt beinvloed. Maar eigenlijk gaat dit boek meer over wetenschap in het algemeen. Maar dat is zo'n breed onderwerp dat de lijn in dit boek volledig ontbreekt. Dit wordt grappig genoeg bevestigd in het laatste hoofdstuk "Scratch where it doesn't itch" wat de deur opent voor een willekeurige lijst van onderwerpen. En dat is niet het enige probleem van dit boek. Voor sommige onderwerpen is de beschreven status volledig verouderd omdat het onderwerp nog volop in ontwikkeling is. Je kunt er dan ook bijna dagelijks in de krant over lezen wat dus ook tot gevolg heeft dat de informatie niet alleen verouderd is maar ook ruimschoots voorhanden elders. Voorbeeld is het hoofdstuk over climate change wat geen enkele nieuwe informatie biedt. Een ander issue is de hoeveelheid overbodige informatie in het boek. De schrijver vindt het nodig om iedere keer aan te geven waarom hij naar een conferentie is geweest of waarom hij een bepaalde persoon heeft gesproken. Het is onduidelijk wat dit inhoudelijk toevoegt. Aan de andere kant schrijft de auteur soms plotsklaps een pagina vol met informatie of een uitleg die alleen voor de ingewijde/kenner te volgen is. Wat zou je denken van "it doesn't really use the glucose so well since it doesn't have a complete Krebs cycle. Its metabolism only gets to the lactic acid stage ..." etc. Probeert de schrijver hier te laten zien hoe slim hij is ter compensatie van de "huis, tuin en keuken"-stijl in de rest van het boek? Natuurlijk staan er af en toe best leuke weetjes in het boek, maar het geheel overziend is dit een duidelijke misser.
