Samenvatting

Set in 1996 Isobel Brewer once the daughter of a wealthy family, now middle aged, and recently widowed, with grown up children, meets again her first love Sam Marsden. The difficult circumstances and the sadness surrounding their early love affair, makes the meeting complicated for Isobel. For three generations the lives of the two families living in West Wales have been interwoven, the previous generation's thoughtless actions affecting their children, and grandchildren. Proud and ambitious, the men folk in the 1930's were driven away from their homeland to find work first in England, then Australia. For some striking it rich brought complications as business espionage and drug smuggling almost ruins a business run by one of the family. The after effects of the 1940-1945 war bring immense changes to Isobel's parents. Changes in her circumstances make it impossible for Isobel to follow the profession she has chosen, bringing her in close contact with the Marsdon family, and the traumas that followed.
