Martin Howard was een betweter die opgroeide in Buckinghamshire, waar hij naar dezelfde lagere en middelbare school ging als Terry Pratchett (maar dan een flink aantal jaren later). Hij werkte een tijdje in de reclame- en de uitgeefwereld, maar in een Disney-achtige opwelling besloot hij zijn dromen na te jagen en fulltime schrijver te worden. Én hij verhuisde naar Frankrijk. Inmiddels is hij de tel kwijt, maar hij schreef heel veel fictie en non-fictie voor volwassenen en kinderen, zowel onder zijn eigen als onder verzonnen namen. Humoristische kinderboeken vindt hij het leukst om te schrijven, en twee van zijn kinderboeken worden inmiddels verfilmd. Martin woont samen met zijn vrouw, drie kinderen, een hond genaamd Licky en een klopgeest die zijn autosleutels steeds verstopt.
