Het siert Emily Perkins dat zij de groeipijnen van het echte leven weet weer te geven door ons een kijkje te gunnen in het leven van Dorothy Perkins van het bittere begin tot het bittere eind. Soms komt niet alles zomaar goed. Het boek is het tegenovergestelde van een romantische komedie. Het houdt ons een spiegel voor en geeft de dingen niet mooier weer dan dat ze zijn. Soms zit het nou eenmaal niet mee niet het leven. Emily Perkins weet dit weer te geven op een manier dat het niet onmiddellijk een overdreven drama wordt. Ik moest denken aan Jonathan Franzen en af en toe aan de fragmentarische schrijfstijl van Virginia Woolf met hier en daar een feministische inslag.
