Het verhaal is, zoals bij meer boeken van Becky Chambers, vrij eenvoudig: een aantal aliens komt door een technische storing een paar dagen vast te zitten in een waystation op een verder kale planeet. Dat is eigenlijk het hele verhaal. Maar ze hebben allemaal hun eigen achtergrond, en in de interactie met elkaar komt wordt steeds meer duidelijk waarom zij zijn geworden wie ze zijn, welke keuzes ze hebben gemaakt en waarom, en wat hun mogelijkheden en beperkingen zijn. En langzaam gaan ze elkaar ook erg waarderen.
Het is een ontzettend boeiend, goed geschreven verhaal met een sterke sfeer.
