I approached this book with a sense of nostalgic curiosity to learn about the atmospheric GCHQ origins in Bletchley Park coupled with a curiosity to learn the how of the Enigma code breaking.
Gordon Welchman succeeds to bring both dimensions to life with detailed of the history the players, an abundance of flavoured anecdotes and detailed description of cryptic analyst and methodology. However on the crucial matter of the mechanical / electrical workings of the Enigma Machine and its consequential process of encrypting and decrypting it suffers from two weaknesses:

Firstly the pictures used to describe the Enigma machine are of very poor quality and limited in scope. To grasp the essence I needed to go to Wikipedia and other internet sources to find un-ambiguous clarity of the mechanics and the electrical circuitry.

Secondly Welchman’s description of encoding and decoding the basic system lacks a clarity which hinders the reader in understanding the basics for the further excellent detailed explanation of grasping the techniques used to crack the German Enigma system.

This is certainly not a book for someone looking for a quick read and easy understanding. Yet for someone with a watchmakers mentality in mechanics and disposition to understand logical thought processes coupled with a strong study perseverance it opens a revealing world of intriguing fascination.
