Losjes gebaseerd op de late Viking invasies in Engeland weet Kay zoals gewoonlijk met zijn prachtige schrijfstijl en taalgebruik de lezer gemakkelijk mee te slepen in een ingewikkeld en gelaagd plot, waar langzaam alle lijntjes samenkomen. Bijgeloof in het Keltische platteland, een losse referentie naar de Sarantinium boeken, en een echo uit de Arthur mythen - Kay blijft een aanrader.
