Arguably the most beautiful story J.R.R. Tolkien ever wrote is the one of Beren and Lúthien. Before Aragorn and Arwen, there had been love between Man and Elf already. In this book that tale is told in rhyming couplets of more than 4000 lines. There is also room for alternative scenes and unwritten cantos.

If that wasn't enough there is the alliterative lay of “The Children of Húrin” that was later turned into a prose book on its own.

Lastly, there is the commentary of editor Christopher Tolkien, which can't be overlooked either. Not only because his was the son of the mastermind that constructed Middle-earth, but also because he has made his mark in the Old Germanic languages himself – most notably with the translation of the Icelandic “Saga of King Heidrek the Wise” – and therefore became the rightful literary heir.
