Samenvatting

Marina Standen, a celebrated pianist, recovering from a severe trauma which left her in a comatose state for several months, comes to live with her sister Rochelle in the small town of Otter Lake. Marina suffers from amnesia. Her doctors warn that she is at risk of self-harm, though she denies this.

In Otter Lake she meets Trent Vargason, whose seven-year-old daughter, Sophie, has been left blind following the car accident that killed her mother and baby brother. She also suffers from selective mutism. Trent and his daughter have moved to Otter Lake so that she can be cared for by her maternal grandparents.

On Christmas day, Marina accompanies her sister to church. The pastor invites her to play for the service but Marina refuses out of fear. Yet she contemplates the organ, even though her mind is blank. She touches the keys and her fingers play, but she doesn’t know what.

On hearing the music, Sophie speaks for the first time, before relapsing into silence. Marina agrees to give lessons to the child while she herself is re-learning to play. Sophie and Kimnik, Rochelle’s rescued dog, form a close bond.

Life in the small town is filled with human drama. Marina struggles to recover her memory. Trent struggles with the guilt over his wife’s death. When Marina suggests that Sophie has recovered some vision, their lives are thrown into turmoil.

Will love be enough to heal them?
