Samenvatting

The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins

An unpleasant ex-soldier, Colonel Herncastle, brought back Moonstone from India, where he was acquired through robbery and murder during the blockade of Seringapatam, angry at his family for disgusting him.He left it in his will. It was a birthday present to his niece Rachel, thus causing her to be attacked by the hereditary guardian of the stone who will never stop calling it back.

Rachel wore a stone at her birthday party. But that night, it disappeared from her room. The suspicion falls on three Indian magicians near the house; Rosanna Spearman, a maidservant who begins to act strangely and then drowns in the local quicksand. And Rachel herself, suddenly acting suspicious and angry with Franklin Blake, who she had previously seemed enamored when he ordered to try to find it. Despite the efforts of the famous detective Sergeant Cuff. But the house party ends in an unsolved mystery and the protagonists disperse.

During the years that followed, there were hints that the diamonds were taken from the house and possibly in a London bank vault, guaranteed to be the money earner. The Indian magician was still nearby, watching and waiting. Rachel's grief and loneliness escalated, especially after her mother's death and she accepted a marriage proposal from her cousin Godfrey Ablewhite, a philanthropist cousin who attended the birthday dinner. Also, and his father owns a bank near the Rachel family's former home, Franklin Blake finally returns from a trip abroad and decides to solve the mystery. He first discovers that Rosanna Spearman's behavior is due to her fall in love with him.She finds evidence (the stained stain on his pajamas) that leads her to believe he is a thief and conceals it to help him make it. Confused by the clues of the evidence and created self-doubt. In desperation she was unable to make him accept her despite all she did for him, she committed suicide, leaving behind a stained robe and a letter he hadn't received at the time due to the trip. To go abroad in a hurry

Now believing Rachel suspects he stole Rosanna's evidence, Franklin's engineers meet and ask her. To his surprise, she told him that she actually saw him stole the diamonds and defended his reputation at her own expense, even though she believed he was a thief and a hypocrite. Hoping to redeem himself, he returns to Yorkshire to the scene and is joined by Mr. Candy's assistant, Mr. Ezra Jennings. Together they continue their investigation and learn that Franklin has been secretly honored during the night of the party. (By physician Mr. Candy who wants revenge on Franklin who criticized the drug); It seems that this, in addition to his anxiety about Rachel and the diamonds and other nervous frustration, led him to put Diamond in a drug trance to move to a safe place. Another evening announcement confirms this. But the way Stone ended up at a London bank is still a mystery solved just a year after the birthday party when Stone was redeemed. Franklin and his companions follow the claimant to a poor waterfront hotel only to find the Indians had arrived first: the claimant is dead and the stone is gone. Under the disguise of the dead, none other than Godfrey Ablewhite, who was found embezzling the contents of the trust fund that was in his custody and faced a disclosure shortly after the birthday party. The mystery of what Blake did while in a poisoned state was resolved: He met Ablewhite in the corridor outside Rachel's room and gave him Moonstone to take back to his father's bank, where It was withdrawn on the morning of the feast. To give to Rachel Seeing his salvation, Ablewhite instead put in a bag of stone and pledged to borrow money to save himself from a temporary bankruptcy. When he was killed, he was traveling to Amsterdam to cut the stones; It is then sold to replenish the stripped trust fund before the beneficiary receives the inheritance.

The mystery is solved, Rachel and Franklin are married, and in the epilogue from the famous adventurer Mr. Mirthweight, the reader learns to restore Moonstone to a place that should be at the forehead of the Statues of gods in India.
