Het is een degelijk werk over de geschiedenis van het nieuwe testament en de denkwijze en omstandigheden in de oudheid(400BCE - 300 CE). Het niveau licht ergens op HBO, en is zeer geschikt als (onderdeel voor) een bijbelstudie. De hooftstukken zijn goed geordend en zijn voorzien van foto's en tekstboxen die bepaalde onderwerpen dieper uitgraven. theologische begrippen die voor het eerst voorkomen in de tekst worden meteen(maar wel eenmalig) uitgelegd zodat ook de beginneling begrijpt waar het over gaat.Ehrman laat ook het licht schijnen op de vele tegenstelling die in de bijbel voorkomen en hoe dat nou mogelijk is.
Na het lezen van dit boek heb ik het begrip 'het Woord is geinspireerd door God' moeten uitrekken als een elastiekje. Wat ik bedoel is dat ik begon te lezen met een redelijke constervatieve gedachten over de auteriteit van de bijbel en is erg snel verschoven naar een liberaal standpunt. In conservatief christelijke kringen in de VS staat Bart D Ehrman en zijn werken dan ook voor Destruction of Faith.

kortom een aanrader als geschiedenis boek, en absoluut een afrader voor opbouw van geloof, of verdediging van theologische opvattingen, daarvoor is het niet geschikt.
