In the 15th and 16th centuries, Turkish tribes in Anatolia (Asia Minor) established the Ottoman Empire, which rose to prominence as one of the world's most powerful states. The Ottoman Empire lasted for more than 600 years before being succeeded by the Turkish Republic and various successor republics in southern Europe and the Middle East in 1922. The Turkish Republic and these successor governments ruled the region after that. Eastern Europe, including Hungary, the Balkans, Greece, and certain areas of Ukraine; the Middle East; North Africa as far west as Algeria; and much of the Arabian Peninsula were all under the sway of the empire at the time of its peak. Osman I (Arabic: Uthmn), the nomadic Turkmen chief who created both the dynasty and the kingdom around 1300, is the source of the term Ottoman.
