The “Riverside Chaucer” is a large bundle containing all of Chaucer’s works, finished and unfinished. I would say that this edition is perfect for students or teachers of Middle English, but I would not recommend it to absolute Chaucer fans.

This book is perfect for students, because it: (1) contains all of Chaucer’s works; (2) provides the reader with helpful footnotes and endnotes, explaining difficult words and passages; (3) introduces every work; (4) contains a general introduction on Chaucer, his life, his works, and the language he used. Students with minimal knowledge of Chaucer and Middle English can still make it through this book without much problems.

I would not recommend it to Chaucer fans, because: (1) it is only a paperback/soft cover, so it damages more easily than a (more expensive) hard cover edition; (2) Chaucer fans will probably be provisioned in Middle English and will therefore perhaps find the explanatory footnotes annoying.

A downside to this wonderful edition is the fact that the explanatory endnotes of all stories are put together in one big section at the end of the book. It takes quite some turning of pages before you find what you are looking for. Also, the paper of the pages is rather thin, so if you intend to highlight passages with a marker or use a pen to scribble notes in the margins, than this is not the book for you. They will shine through on the next page. However, this is to be expected of such a reasonably priced edition.

Dit boek is volgens mij echt nodig als je Engels studeert en dan Middle English. Als leek is dit niet een boek waar je even in gaat bladeren. Voor studie van de "godfather" Chaucer is het echt onmisbaar.
