The Science Fiction Film in Contemporary Hollywood examines films of the era in order to provide a more precise definition for the genre, one that is situated in the social semiotics and specific historical context of 21st-century American cinema. Using the semiotic square theory outlined by literary scientist Algirdas J. Greimas, this book proposes a new taxonomy and definition of the contemporary American science fiction film.
Through the lens of Greimas' model, Evdokia Stefanopoulou explores a range of science fiction tropes-ranging from the techno-human, the alien other, dystopias, utopias, and other fantastic worlds-to situate the genre into semiotic squares of 'science fiction bodies' and 'science fiction worlds.' This study is complemented by an examination of the social and historical context of the films' production, based on methods of New Film History and the study of primary sources, interviews and economic data. The articulation of the semiotic analysis with the exo-semiotic research points to the pivotal role of the science fiction film in both the preservation and transformation of contemporary Hollywood.
