Born Herbert George Wells in Kent in 1866, H. G. Wells was an outspoken socialist and pacifist, whose works caused some controversy. He is more widely known as a science fiction writer for the novels that he published between 1895 and 1901: The Time Machine, The Island of Doctor Moreau, The Invisible Man, The War of the Worlds, When the Sleeper Wakes and The First Men in the Moon. All, except for When the Sleeper Wakes, have been made into films.
Along with Jules Verne, H. G. Wells is also known as 'the Father of Science Fiction'.
His later novels were more realistic and he wrote many genres, including contemporary novels, history and social commentary.
H. G. Wells' classic science fiction masterpiece The Time Machine explores human nature. The Time Traveler finds himself in 802,701 A.D., where he meets the peaceful Eloi and encounters the violent Morlocks. Wells uses these two descendants of man to explore evil and its causes, drawing conclusions that might surprise you in this riveting tale that has stood the test of time. This Rediscovered Books edition includes the deleted portion of chapter eleven that ran in the original serialization, but was removed by Wells for book publication; it runs after the story as The Grey Man. In addition to The Grey Man, this edition also contains the full text of The Chronic Argonauts: Wells' first time travel story, which he borrows liberally from for The Time Machine.
